Cookies. What more needs to be said about cookies? Cookies may very well be the perfect baked good: sweet, portable, and endlessly variable.

I started making cookies as gifts in 1996 or thereabouts, to send to my brother and his family for Christmas in Florida. It was simpler somehow to make five different kinds of cookies, throw them into a box, and mail them South than to buy individual presents for my niece and nephews. Besides, then I get to enjoy the tasty treats as well.

Back in the day, I would just bake up a double batch (or so) of chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, peanut butter, and oatmeal cookies and mail them off. Back in the day, I only sent cookies to one place. NOW it's a lot more complicated. Now my niece and nephews are all grown up and living on their own, some with spouses of their own, and kids even! Plus now we send cookies to David's family members and a friend or two or three. We give cookies to our next door neighbor, and I bring cookies to work.

Nowadays, it's so much more complicated that I had to create a cookie recipe spreadsheet to help me keep everything straight. One sheet lists ingredients, gives me the approximate yield of the recipe, and tells me how much of each ingredient I need to make a double or triple batch. No more countless trips to the grocery store for the one, two, or five ingredients I forgot to buy or didn't buy enough of! The other sheets list each individual recipe with the ingredient amounts in calculations so I can convert from a batch of 1 to a batch of 2.5 just by entering those numbers, and then see exactly how much cream of tartar or cinnamon to add without having to do the conversions in my head. This is because doing the math in my head for that many cookies all at once… never worked out exactly well.

This may make me sound like a serious baker or something, but truthfully I'm not. Christmas time is about the only time I bake cookies, and I find myself thinking that's really too bad. I love cookies. They're basically the perfect food: sweet, portable, and open to endless variety.
